How to Disassemble & Reassemble Your P365

This guide covers field stripping the SIG Sauer P365 — takedown, disassembly, and reassembly. The same steps apply to the P365X and P365 XL, which share the same takedown procedure. It follows the official SIG Sauer P365 operator manual.

For the actual wipe-down and lubrication points, see the companion cleaning & lubrication guide.

The 3 Controls You Need to Know

If you've never taken a P365 apart before, these are the only controls you really need to recognize:

  • Magazine release: the button that drops the magazine.
  • Slide catch lever: the lever you use to lock the slide open.
  • Takedown lever: the rotating lever above the trigger that you turn clockwise to release the slide. Unlike a Glock, the P365 has a dedicated takedown lever — no trigger press required during disassembly.

Part 1: Confirm It's Unloaded

Step 1. Take out the magazine by pressing the magazine release and letting it drop free. If it does not fall on its own, pull it the rest of the way out.

Removing the magazine does not empty the chamber by itself. That is what the next steps are for.

Step 2. With the magazine out, locate the slide catch lever and press it upward with your dominant-hand thumb.

This is the lever that will hold the slide open once you pull it all the way back.

Step 3. With your support hand, pull the slide all the way back while holding the slide catch lever until it locks in the open position and you can clearly see the chamber.

If you can't pull the slide all the way back while holding the slide catch lever, that's common for new shooters. Two simple tricks help:

  • Leave the empty magazine in the pistol. When you pull the slide fully back, the slide will usually lock open on the empty magazine by itself.
  • Use gloves or a little extra grip if your hands are slipping on the slide.

Step 4. Visually and physically check the chamber and make sure it is empty. Also look into the magazine well so you know the magazine is out and no loose round is present.

Once you have confirmed the chamber is empty and the magazine is out, you can move on. No trigger press is needed on the P365.

Part 2: Disassembly (Field Strip)

Step 5. From the locked-back position, rotate the takedown lever clockwise until it stops.

If the lever does not want to move, the slide is usually not locked all the way to the rear. Recheck Step 3 before forcing anything.

Step 6. Pull the slide slightly rearward to disengage the slide catch lever, then guide it forward off the frame. It only takes a tiny movement to the rear.

The slide comes straight forward off the front of the frame. Keep control of it instead of letting it shoot forward under spring pressure.

If the slide does not come off easily:

  • Make sure the takedown lever is fully rotated.
  • Make sure the slide was locked open before you rotated the takedown lever.
  • Use only a tiny rearward movement to release the slide catch lever.

Step 7. Remove the recoil spring guide assembly. Push it forward slightly to release it from the barrel lug, then lift it out.

Lift it out slowly and keep control of it. It is under spring tension.

Step 8. Take out the barrel. Once the recoil spring guide assembly is out, the barrel should lift free easily. This is as far as you need to go for routine field stripping.

Part 3: Reassembly

Step 9. Put the barrel back into the slide.

Make sure it sits flat and fully down in the slide before you move on.

Step 10. Reinstall the recoil spring guide assembly and make sure the guide head is centered on the barrel lug.

If that guide head is off to one side or not fully seated, stop and reseat it before reinstalling the slide.

Step 11. Guide the slide onto the frame rails and pull it fully to the rear until the slide catch lever locks it open. If the takedown lever pops back toward its normal position while you're locking the slide open, that's normal.

If the slide does not want to go on smoothly, do not force it. Take it back off and make sure the barrel and recoil spring assembly are seated correctly.

Step 12. If the takedown lever is still pointing down in the "open" position, rotate it counter-clockwise until it stops.

Step 13. Check function. With the pistol still unloaded, rack the slide a few times, make sure it moves freely, and confirm it will lock open on an empty magazine.

That's it. Once the sequence makes sense, the P365 is one of the easier pistols to field strip. The main things beginners need to remember are simple: magazine out, chamber checked, slide locked open, takedown lever rotated, then slide forward under control.

Once you're done here, follow the companion cleaning & lubrication guide for the actual maintenance work.

How many rounds do you have on your P365?

Your P365 is due for a new recoil spring guide assembly every 2,500 rounds — but that interval is only useful if you actually know how many rounds you've put through the pistol.

If you don't replace the recoil spring on time, the gun can start jamming, not fully closing after a shot, and wearing out parts faster.

Log each practice session in RangeReady and the app keeps a running round count for every firearm you own. When your P365 is approaching 2,500 rounds you'll know it's time to plan the recoil spring guide assembly replacement — and the same approach works for cleanings and any other wear-part interval you care about.

RangeReady flow: record a practice session, get maintenance reminders on the firearms screen, and log completed tasks.
